I Voted

This is being sold on Etsy for $4. It’s supposed to be funny. It’s not. Completely accurate though. There was a time when I was proud of belonging to two of the greatest countries.

Pakistan has always been a country of resilient people, we have come out on top no matter what the circumstances.

The United States, well that was the country that accepted me even with all its racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, I was able to call it home. Here I learned to accept those that were different. Appreciate others for their uniqueness. I made connections with people regardless of their background, just because they were good humans. And I’m grateful to be able to pass down these lessons to my kids.

Today, I sit in disgust of my own-self, unable to understand. Or maybe I do understand because I always knew but never thought I would watch in real time and even be a silent participant through my votes and my taxes.

There are no good choices. There are no easy decisions. Don’t look away. Don’t give up on those that need us. Be angry, be disappointed, but please show up for those who our counties are disappointing.

Eventually they will disappoint us too. We would want the rest of the world to stand with us when that inevitably happens.
